This post, well, this series of posts has been a long time coming now. Although, I label my blog as a "Lifestyle Blog", I guess I haven't been posting much about ways to improve your life aside from looking glam in today's trends. Something I personally struggle with in my life is balance and consistency. For the most part I've got my sh** together but I tend to focus on one thing and lose sight of others pretty easily... major ADD over here! Anyway, I always want to keep it real on my blog. I only post when I feel like I have valuable content, it's never forced. I consider The Haute Brunette as one of my 'jobs' but I never want it to feel like one and I don't want you guys thinking I am putting out content just to stay relevant in the social world, that's not how I work.

I wear many hats in my professional life, I am a health Insurance advisor (this is how I make my money... I've had many people ask me that), blogger (which also makes money but not nearly as much as my 'day job'... but feeds my creative side) and then, of course, Witch Doctor by night.

Sergio and all my close friends are well acquainted with the Witch Doctor, Alyssa and now you get a chance to meet her too! I have been using essential oils for almost 5 years now. It's another one of those things that feeds my creativity. I love mixing and matching oils, making sprays, rubs, scrubs and perfumes. On top of that, essential oils provide amazing health benefits you can't find anywhere else.

I could talk about this stuff for hours and hours and I don't want you to get bored so I'll break down some potion recipes into multiple posts.

Like I said, I use oils like crazy. I figured I would start with the one oil I use on a daily basis and has literally changed my life. I should probably think of a more creative name for each potion but this one I simply named my antiviral oil.

Let's start from the beginning...

I have an apartment in San Diego and in New York but I have spent 90% of my time in New York since last September. Life in NYC is just so different than the west coast. Within the first few months of being here, I was sick once a month with a cold or unidentified illness. I can honestly say I felt constantly sick for the first 6 months.

I felt like I was caged in a sterile environment my entire life and then I was released into the wild!

There are millions of people sneezing and touching things around you at ALL times here. Not to mention the subway! I love when people think it's like below them to take the subway, I am a busy girl and I do not have time to sit in traffic to get across town in a cab. Of course, there are times when it is not a good option, like in a  formal gown etc. Anyway, my body went into shock and I was getting sick left and right.

I was convincing Doctors all over this city and even my Doctor back home to write me antibiotics, which do not work on a cold, but I was so desperate to feel better that I didn't feel like I had any other options.

But then, I started googling.

Colds are viruses and there is no 'cure' for viruses. I started my search with just that, 'best ways to treat or cure viruses'. As soon as I typed that in the search engine, every single link was for essential oils. I read for hours and hours all of the different types to manage every type of viral issue so I wrote down all of the ones that were high in antiviral properties and decided to put them to the test.

Aside from the antiviral properties, essential oils are aroma therapeutic. High levels of stress can lower the body's immune system and soothing aromas work at lowering stress levels. If anything, the scent can calm your ass down!

The following oils all contain some sort of antiviral property...

Eucalyptus - Arthritis, bronchitis, cold sores, colds, coughing, fever, flu, poor circulation, sinusitis
Lemon - Athlete's foot, colds, corns, dull skin, flu, oily skin, spots, varicose veins, warts
Lemongrass - Acne, excessive perspiration, insect repellent, muscle aches, oily skin, stress
Thyme - Arthritis, colds, cuts, dermatitis, flu, insect bites, laryngitis, lice, muscle aches, sore throat
Tea Tree - Acne, candida, cold sores, colds, cuts, flu, insect bites, itching, migraine, oily skin
Peppermint - Asthma, exhaustion, flu, gas, headache, nausea, sinusitis
Oregano - flu, indigestion, infections, cold sores, period cramps
Lavender- Anxiety, bruises, cystitis, depression, headache, stress, stretch marks

I use Ylang Ylang oil in all my potions because it is the ultimate relaxant. Some people say it's so relaxing that it can be an aphrodisiac and improve your sex life! I also add it to all my perfumes, more on that in another post.

I put 10 drops of each oil in a 1 oz.  bottle and then fill the top with liquid coconut oil. You can use regular coconut oil but the liquid is the best because it doesn't harden and it's easy to use. You can use any type of liquid oil to dilute the potion like almond oil, avocado oil, apricot oil, jojoba oil even olive oil. It's really important to dilute or you can seriously burn your skin.

I started rubbing this oil all over, seriously all over. Even in places that are very private... if you catch my drift. I put the oils on the most absorbent areas of my skin; my stomach, my feet, my hands, my neck, my boobs (boobs are highly absorbent) and even, like I said, in my very private areas. Let's get really personal here but I have read multiple places that area between your vagina and your anus is the most absorbent area on the body. Needless to say, I have tried it all and it's working! I use this oil morning, noon and night and I haven't been sick since January. Also, If I feel like I am getting sick, I double up on my applications and I feel better the next day.

This remedy is a great option to help any sort of viral issue and I have read that these oils do a lot for  people with more serious immune deficiencies. I am not Doctor and this solution has worked great for me and my needs. I would definitely consult a Doctor if you want to start using any new substance on your skin. Even though they are all natural, everyone's body works so differently and you never know how you will respond or if you have an unknown allergy.

Each oil alone has so many great benefits to enhance your life other than preventing illness. You can purchase most oils online or at places like Whole Foods, holistic markets and organic food stores. I've even seen them at regular grocery stores and Target.

I got a bit long winded here but I am super passionate about my oils. I have so many more amazing remedies I will be sharing.

I'd love to hear different ways you use oils and if there are specific ones you recommend!
