Throughout the craziness of my daily life I always make time to stay informed about health and wellness. My cousin recently got me hooked on essential oils and after implementing some basic practices I am huge believer. Although I use essential oils during the entire day, it is incredible how much better I feel just by changing some small things in my morning routine. Remember that old idiom about waking up on the wrong side of the bed? Well, waking up feeling unwell, rushed, stressed, tired and anxious can play a huge part in the way the rest of your day plays out.

First things first, I set my alarm clock to an extra hour before I need to get going. If it takes you an entire hour to shower and get ready, set it for an hour before that. Waking up an extra hour early might seem like the worst thing in the world (trust me, I cherish sleep just as much as the next person) but feeling rushed can put a real damper on your mental and physical health.

Typically, coffee has always been the first substance to enter my body in the morning. Don't worry, I'm not suggesting you give up coffee (I'd sooner die) but I am suggesting you change it up a little. Since I am the biggest fan of lemons, there is literally a bucket of lemons in my kitchen at all times. Now that I am on an essential oils kick, I found a million uses for lemon oil. Here are just a few… Lemons serve as a powerful antioxidant and a great source of vitamin C. Before your coffee, add two drops of lemon oil to hot water and drink that as soon as you wake up. For those of you struggling with weight loss, this is a huge benefit to your metabolism as it helps get your digestive system get ready for your first meal. It gives you a boost of energy, burns fat while sustaining muscle and contains cleansing properties which help you fight bloating throughout the day. It is best to wait about 30 minutes before drinking your coffee, eating breakfast or even brushing your teeth, to let the benefits settle in.

While I'm waiting to drink my coffee I start my morning beauty routine. If you haven't read my various rants about natural skin care you can read them here and here. Mostly everything I use on my skin contains citrus and vitamin C to fight against aging and sunspots. To give my skin a little boost I added 5 drops of lemon essential oil to all of my cleanser and moisturizer bottles. Lemon oil helps manage blemishes by balancing oil glands and minimizing oil production. Plus, it smells great and provides an aromatic surge to your senses.

COFFEE TIME! I'll get into the different ways I take my coffee in another post (and NONE of them include creamers or artificial sweeteners, yuck) but for this post we'll skip that and get into the benefits of adding peppermint oil to your cup of joe. I don't know about you, but I'd be a total zombie without my coffee fix. I add a drop of peppermint oil to my cup because it helps improve concentration and alertness. Plus, when your coffee is hot it clears up your sinuses in a second. Once you experience that initial sip, you won’t want it any other way! I swear, it clears up any morning fogginess you've got going on. Aside from optimum brain function, peppermint supports healthy digestion as well as soothing indigestion. Another major benefit is that peppermint helps trigger a sensation of fullness after meals. I'll try anything that curbs my everlasting appetite!
